Although there are a lot of public service announcements and reminders on TV about the use of fireworks this coming New Year’s Eve, a lot of Filipinos still insist on keeping up with the tradition of welcoming the new year with a bang. Even our family does—at least just this year—since this is going to be the last new year celebration we’ll have in our house. We’re moving, remember?
Fireworks are pretty, and LOUD. And they have to be, since tradition says that the loud noise will scare away evil spirits and bad luck for a prosperous New Year. But the thing is, loud noise not only scare evil spirits and bad luck, but our canine friends as well.

Dogs are a whole lot more sensitive than us humans. A loud bang from a labintador may be tolerable noise for us, but for dogs, that’s like the beginning of World War III. For them, the noise is magnified—you can just imagine how scary it is for our pets come New Year’s Eve. Read the rest of this entry »

This is a sponsored post, but do read on. It’s quite informative, promise
What does it really mean when you say “natural dog food?” Some of my dog-loving relatives and friends have tossed this word around, each saying that they’re feeding their dogs the best natural dog food. But do we really know what it means?
When Sheero was still alive, I used to buy her baked doggy snacks from Animal House Clinic every time I happened to be in a branch. Even from the packaging you’d know the goodies were homemade—they came in standard sealed plastics packaged in a decorative brown paper bag. Sheero used to love these all natural goodies, but I couldn’t buy as much for her as I’d like to—these home-baked doggy snacks were pretty pricey. Read the rest of this entry »

Thanks to Jun Asis for sending me this touching story.
Losing a pet is very difficult—I know that for a fact. It’s devastating, and even makes you wonder if the pain will ever end. I’m doing better now (much better than my crying-every-hour state the first week Sheero passed away), but I still get pangs of sadness (and tears) whenever I remembered fun times with Sheero. It’s hard not to—I’ve lost my furry best friend.
Below is a touching story by Jun Razal, which tries to make sense of the passing of his beloved Shih Tzu, Budoy. Read the rest of this entry »

Do you remember the TV commercial where a series of kids were asked to have the “Marshmallow Test,” which tested the kids’ response to delayed gratification? I think it was some kind of a milk commercial.
Ever tried doing something like that with your dog?

We did last year. Only Spike and Sheero passed (that’s Sheero waiting patiently for a piece of pizza on the picture).
Having a lot of dogs, there are canine behaviors that you can’t help but notice in a dog pack—it’s easier to compare their personalities when you know all of them. It’s so easy to see who the alpha dog is, but tests like this “Marshmallow Test” really helped us know more about our dogs. Read the rest of this entry »

The adorable Grumpler is in the Crumpler logo:

Shantee was already getting grumpy and pissy by the time we took this pic yesterday at Serendra in Bonificio Global City. The sales ladies were kind enough to let Shantee pose on their huge logo sculpture outside the Crumpler store, and it wasn’t just because Marc bought a ridiculously expensive camera-laptop backpack from them. They found her cute, even if she was already getting grumpy. I guess Shantee was tired by that time and wanted to get some beauty sleep
This pic is one of my favorite Shantee photos so far—a grumpy-looking dog in the Crumpler logo
Anyhoo, click here if you’d like to see more of Shantee’s morning adventure in Serendra!

It seems that the Shih Tzu breed is becoming quite a trend with dog owners lately. Just go to pet-friendly shopping centers like Eastwood City and Tiendesitas—you’ll see them everywhere. A few years ago, it was the Labrador Retriever popular in homes. That makes me wonder… Will there ever come a time when our very own native dog gain popularity among dog owners?

The native dog, commonly called the “askal” (a colloquial shortcut for “asong kalye,” which translates to “dog from the streets”), are usually looked down upon. Worse, they usually get intentionally run down by merciless drivers or taken to slaughter houses to be put to death and later eaten. Some people think they’re expendable since they don’t have pedigrees worth thousands of pesos. Heck, even some breeders who claim to be “dog lovers” look down upon the native dogs.
They may not have pedigrees to boast about, but native dogs are as smart and as loyal as any other dog breed. Read the rest of this entry »
