This post was filed under Pet Events in the City.

Lookie here, another event for pet-lovers!

Daddy’s Pet: A Father’s Day Pet Event will be held on 27 June 2010 (it’s this Sunday!) from 10am to 5pm at One Esplanade in Pasay City. There will be lots activities for day: pet grooming area, bazaar, a fashion show, training area, special performances, arts and crafts, pet adoption, and an animal welfare forum with Compassion And Responsibility for Animals (CARA). Dads will have a pampering area, and can even participate in a special dad-and-pet mini-Olympics!

Hopefully, Marc and I can participate in this event along with Shantee and Kubrick! :D

Aqua Toy’s much-needed bath

This post was filed under My Dogs.

This is Aqua Toy, Kubrick’s favorite dog toy, hanging to dry:

Aqua Toy squeaks, squawks and pretty much just lays there whenever Kubrick feels the need to chew and play. The poor thing has already turned an ugly shade of very dark brown from its original color of yellow. Kubrick barked and whined, but no, Aqua Toy needs to take a bath!

Kubrick is very possessive of this dog toy, a gift originally meant for Shantee from my friend Nina. I guess it was his only “friend” when he first came here and Shantee thought it best to just ignore him so he’d eventually disappear. My Shih Tzus are long past the stage of getting-to-know-you, but Kubrick still hangs on to Aqua Toy.

This isn’t the first time Aqua Toy took a bath — the first one being the aftermath of Ondoy, when my husband and I thought it unhygienic and unhealthy for Kubrick to chew on a dog toy that was recently drenched in flood water. Kubrick was so happy when he got Aqua Toy back, it was like a one-sided gleeful reunion between two old friends. I’m pretty sure he’ll react the same when Aqua Toy emerges clean and yellow from the hanger tomorrow :)

Battling the sweltering summer heat

This post was filed under Pet Care.

One of the best things about living in a tropical country is never having to worry about preparing for the cold winter. Here in the Philippines, there are only two seasons: wet and dry seasons. We usually have to worry about is water-proofing our houses from the constant rains and typhoons during the rainy season. Floods are always a great tragedy.

Preparing for the summer season is almost always frequently overlooked. For us humans, summer usually means two months of fun days under the sun. But for our funny friends, it’s not only uncomfortable, but could also be a matter of life and death.

Since our family don’t go out too often during the summer (me and my husband love to travel, but the summer heat is just too overwhelming), we’ve come up with a list of “to-do’s” for our dogs so that they would be comfortable during the summer. Continue Reading

Google Translate for Animals!

This post was filed under Games and Apps.

A new app for android phones! According to its website, this app “is an application for Android phones that recognises and transcribes words and phrases that are common to a species, like cats for example.”

Translate for Animals is another one of Google’s project hoping to bridge language barriers in order to better understand our animal friends :D Continue Reading

Pet owners: Consult a vet, not the internet!

This post was filed under Dog Ownership.

When I first started this blog, I expected to receive comments and messages from readers asking advise regarding their pet’s health. I’ve made the necessary disclaimer on my site that I am not veterinarian, and that this blog is purely a chronicle of my life with my dogs. But still, I still keep on getting messages from people seeking answers regarding their pet’s condition. I don’t mind, honestly, as I’m ok with recommending vets I know anyway. But lately, I seem to be getting one two many questions on what to do about their pet’s condition that I find it quite disturbing already.

I understand that times are hard, and whatever you can save, you keep it. Consulting a vet or any of those pet health services don’t come cheap, and I know sometimes it’s tempting to simply search the net and try to discern for ourselves what our dog’s symptoms mean. But don’t forget that when you decided to keep a pet, you understand the responsibilities that go with it — and that includes vet expenses. Continue Reading

Get your paws ready for the first-ever TailRunners: The Metro Dog Run 2010!

This post was filed under Doggie Fun Runs, Fundraisers and Drives.

Is it obvious I’m so excited for this upcoming event? Well, I am! :D You see, my husband and I have been joining fun runs lately — for health and bonding purposes. We’ve been wishing we could bring our little Shih Tzus along, but the shortest distance event there is in a human run race is usually 3km — a distance too far for my short-legged sweethearts. Besides, it’s really not advisable to bring dogs to a human race event. The sheer number of people in one place could be hazardous for the humans and the dogs themselves. And that’s why I can’t wait for TailRunners: The Metro Dog Run 2010!!! :D

For the first time, a race event tailor-made to accommodate dogs! The race kits include not only singlets for human racers, but “race bandanas” and poop scooper for their canine partners as well :D But that’s not all… The race event categories and race maps were also made for dogs in mind — 1.5km, 3km and 5km. The 1.5km event is a realistic distance for short-legged fur-babies like mine — Shantee can do 2km walkies, did you know? :D Winners will receive prizes. Though Shantee and I don’t have illusions of winning the race, we’re still banking on finishing it!

Can’t run? Well, you and your dog can still join in the fun! At around 6:15am, fun games will begin for non-runners. A lot of activities are planned from 4:00am to 10:00am on race day, dog-lovers like you just shouldn’t miss it!

TailRunners: The Metro Dog Run 2010 will be held on Saturday, 17 April 2010 at the SM Mall of Asia and is co-presented by Royal Canin, Pet Express, and MyPetChannel.tv. For more details, visit the official TailRunners microsite. See you there!!! :D

Suryia and Roscoe: BFFs!!!

This post was filed under Social Dogs.

Suryia is an Orangutan and Roscoe is a dog, and they’re BFFs! (Best Friends Forever). Two years ago, Roscoe wandered into The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (TIGERS)’s compound and met Suryia, TIGERS’ animal ambassador. Since then, the two became friends — best of friends! No one came forward to claim Roscoe, so he’s there ever since. Here’s a video of Suryia and Roscoe… It’s just adorable! :)

They also have a website, be make sure to take a look!

Happy Holidays from Pinoy Dog-Lover! :)

This post was filed under Surviving Holidays.

So, it’s a new year again! :)

I was supposed to add a photo of the doggies in this post, but they don’t seem to be in the mood for pictorials today. Firecrackers are scaring them! (As early as now, we can already hear some firecrackers and fireworks in the distance).

It’s been a long human tradition to celebrate the coming of New Year with a bang (or rather, loud bangs) — doing so is believed to ward of evil spirits and bad luck. Well, that’s for us humans, but for dogs, it’s an entirely different story. A dog’s hearing is much more sensitive than ours — imagine how loud the firecrackers can get for them.

It might be a good idea to keep the dogs inside the house once the celebrations start, making them feel “safer.” If that’s not possible, cover their house with a cloth or anything that can muffle the noise. Our bigger dogs usually roam the yard, but on New Year’s Eve, my dad always makes it a point to let them in the covered laundry area. We can’t really let them in the other parts of the house, as we already have other dogs in there and doing so might result to a doggy war for territory. Our “inside dogs” don’t really go to the laundry area, so that’s where our bigger dogs go before the loud bangs of New Year’s Eve begin.

It also won’t hurt to give your canine friend a comforting hug to make them feel safer :) I certainly plan to do that later… All of our doggies will receive a comforting hug tonight! :)

Happy New Year everyone! And stay safe!!! :)

Photo Day Sunday: Gossips!

This post was filed under Photo Day Sunday.

Here’s a little something to end your week: Gossips!

Gossips!

That’s Kubrick and Choknat “gossiping” on the wooden swing in our garden.

Kubrick gets along pretty well with all our other dogs (being the friendly pup that he is), but sometimes he doesn’t like them getting too close (he’s so small, the others scare him sometimes). Our aspin mix Harry and Choknat are the only ones he allow to get that close to him :D
