Doggie Day Fair 2

Shantee had an Aww-mazing Day in Tahanan Village!

She certainly did! It’s been a while since Shantee had been on a road trip with us. Science Diet’s Aww-mazing Day event was in Tahanan Village, Paranaque. We live in Cainta, so it wasn’t exactly near. Luckily, it was Sunday… Not too many cars, so we got there in about an hour and a half. Shantee wouldn’t mind a longer trip, but with my husband Marc driving, getting stuck in traffic would probably not be a good idea for the sanity of the humans in the car 😛

When we got there, registration was already starting. So many doggies! Continue Reading

Well-Fed, Well-Nurtured: A responsible pet ownership campaign

In the Philippines, there are about 9 million households currently owning at least one pet dog or cat — and this increases every year. With this, there’s also an increase in pet-friendly establishments, as well as an increasing appreciation for health and wellness for pets even to the point of pet humanization. I myself have been a witness to this… I still remember the time when pet salons were so difficult to find that we always end up having our dogs groomed at the vet. But now, almost everywhere you’ll find shops and stores offering pet pampering services. Unfortunately, even with an increase awareness of caring for pets, there are still a lot of owners who still feed their pets leftovers or table scraps and neglect to provide veterinary care.

To address the need of educating pet owners with proper pet care, the Pet Food Institute (PFI) and the Veterinary Practitioners Association of the Philippines (VPAP) collaborated for a responsible pet ownership campaign: Well-Fed, Well-Nurtured. Continue Reading

Kubrick at the Busy Paws Time to Play launch!

Last weekend, my husband Marc and I (together with Kubrick) attended the launch of Busy Paws Time to Play at Mercato Centrale. It was organized by Urban Sports K9, a club of passionate dog owners with the goal to get fellow dog lovers into canine sports. Aside from the usual agility course, they are also training their pooches the sport of flyball.

The session began with introductions from Urban Sports K9, and eventually guided us to basic obedience. Of course, the dog needs obedience before you can even put them through an agility course! 😛 Since Marc is more athletic between the two of us, we thought it best to have him go through the session with Kubrick. Besides, even if it’s usually me who walked Kubrick, they were partners who placed fourth place in the It’s a Dog’s Life fun run last year. What could go wrong, right?

Apparently, a lot. Because during the first part of obedience, which is simply walking your dog properly, proved to be a huge obstacle for Marc and Kubrick. I’ve always known Kubrick was afraid of other dogs — especially big ones — but we never really had much problem with it. He’d be hesitant at first, then in a few minutes of walking he’ll be fine. But I guess it’s different when he’s just walking with his human “daddy.” 🙂 They could run together just fine, but apparently, walkies with other dogs is an entirely different story altogether!

I guess Kubrick was just so used to having Marc be his “protector,” that he spent most of the time cowering beside him. Kubrick refused to walk, and when they stopped, he’d spend his time literally attached to Marc. It seemed as if Marc would disappear if he took a step away from him. He wasn’t barking or anything, just afraid of the other dogs and leaving Marc’s side. Folks from Urban Sports K9 did their best to help us, even gave him treats, but he wasn’t budging. He wasn’t leaving Daddy’s side! Continue Reading

You are cordially invited to the Bow & Wow Benefit Dinner for CARA!

This post was filed under Events, Fundraisers and Drives.

When: Saturday, 30 June 2012 at 6:30PM
Where: Rockwell Tent, Makati City
What: Bow & Wow Benefit Dinner for CARA

Not all animals are privileged to have a family to care for them, give them shelter and love. Some are left on the streets, abused, or made to fight to death. But through the dedication of CARA Welfare Philippines, these poor animals are given a second chance in life — away from abuse and neglect, a forever home filled with love and care.

Through a benefit dinner to be held on June 30, Bow & Wow (the Philippines’ first all-natural food store) aims to raise funds for the organization. All proceeds of each ticket costing Php3,500 (with dog) and Php2,500 (without dog) will go straight to CARA. Bow & Wow has partnered with other establishments in order to make this possible. Help give the rescued Laguna Pit Bulls a second chance

Sometimes, I really can’t help but wonder how cruel to animals other people can be.

Recently, two Philippine animal welfare groups, Island Rescue Organizations (IRO) and CARA Welfare Philippines (Compassion And Responsibility for Animals), were able to rescue around 222 dogs from a Korean dog-fighting syndicate in San Pablo, Laguna. Dog-fighting, by itself, is already an inhumane treatment for these animals we call our best friends. But it’s made worse by the awful conditions they were in. Continue Reading

Walkies: Morning, afternoon, or night?

This post was filed under Dog Health, Pet Wellness, Recreation.

For my dogs, walkies is their most favorite activity for the day. I’m yet to master walking four dogs at the same time, but it’s always fun for me and the dogs. I try my best to give them walkies every day. After all, it’s exercise for me too (handling four happy dogs is such a workout!).

Walkies at the village park

We’ve been doing walkies at different times of the day, and the question is: What time is the best time for walkies? Continue Reading

PVET Farm & Pet

This post was filed under Film, Media and the Web, Pet Magazines.

Don’t you wish you had a compilation of the most popular dog food brands and be able to compare them without needing to go to the store? How about having a directory of vet clinics for quick reference? A few weeks ago, I was able to receive a copy of a publication that has these: the first issue of PVET Farm & Pet.

PVET Farm & Pet is actually an offshoot of Medicomm Pacific’s PVET Drug Directory, primarily to aid practitioners in the animal and veterinary industries. But this digest have some pretty useful information for us pet owners too! Continue Reading

I’ll be bringing Shantee for this event since a fashion show is more her thing than Kubrick’s. She loves getting all dolled up — she believes that “dressing up” means extra attention from humans and going to new places. Besides, it’s going to give us a bit of “alone time.” My husband Marc and I have been training Kubrick for his upcoming dog runs in March. Though Shantee still gets her regular walkies, Kubrick gets walkies plus running time with us. We can’t take her along our runs; I don’t think she likes it much 😛 At least with this fashion show, she’ll be in her element and enjoy herself 🙂

Hobbes and Landes also has a Pet of the Month promo for dogs who like dressing up. Hopefully, I’ll be able to find the time to swing by their store before February 20 so Shantee can join too.

See you on the 26th! 🙂
